Budhni in Madhya Pradesh is famous for its 200-year-old tradition of handcrafted lacquered wooden craft. Lathe-turned woodwork is the craft of shaping a piece of wood as it spins rapidly on a lathe using specialised handheld cutting tools. 

The craft has been sustained for generations by the local Vishwakarma community located near Budhni Ghat along the Narmada River. Traditionally made from teak (Sagwan), artisans now predominantly use soft Dudhi wood (wrightia tinctoria) because it is easy to carve, light in color, and makes the bright natural lacquer colours glow. 

Craftsmen use traditional lathe machines and hand chisels from morning to twilight to spin and shape raw wood into symmetric, smooth items.

These distinct marks are proof of authentic hand-madeness and do not constitute manufacturing defects or structural flaws.
